Expertise: Community & Greenspace

Arc has made community engagement, wellbeing and social capital core to its ethos and practice. A key objective in our approach is to leave behind an enriched environment for people. For us this means to live and work in a place where there is easy access to quality greenspace for play, exercise and recreation; where there is ‘nature nearby’, the chance to encounter wildlife; and where there is a sense of place. The evidence is overwhelming that these things make people, and communities happier and the neighbourhoods in which they live healthier, more content and less troubled.

We work with clients building new homes, new suburbs and villages, and help them to design-in community wellbeing. It’s almost always easier and less expensive than churning out unforgivably bland and uninspiring public realm.

But we also help clients with existing greenspace that isn’t working, and may even be exacerbating problems. We will work with local residents, housing providers and other agencies to ‘re-imagine’ these spaces, and then to fix them.

Clients have commissioned us to design and run public and community engagement events, planning-for-real, family and children’s environment workshops; to design and re-design greenspace and shared amenity areas and to masterplan for environmental wellbeing.
